Smif-n-Wessun – Wrekonize

Before people get confused – there are 2 different versions of Smif-n-Wessun’sWrekonize“. The popular version samples Bill WithersJust the Two of Us” (way before Will Smith or Dr. Evil & Mini-me). The album version samples New York Port Authority.

The NYPA were a group on hitmakers Holland-Dozier-Holland’s short-lived record label Invictus. Long story short, the album flopped and the group disbanded before recording a second album. Being named after a dirty bus terminal in New York City may have contributed to the lack of sales.

The album is mostly disco, but the cut “Home on a Rainy Day” is a sweet soul ballad. The intro bassline was filtered like most early Beatminerz production and used for the main loop of Smif-N-Wessun’s “Wrekonize”.

Take the Time (to sample)

Here is another one from Pete Rock / Smif-N-Wessun’s “Monumental” album. I actually made a beat using the same loop prior to Pete Rock, which is how I found this one. The sample is from the last song on the album, “Take the Time“.

Soul Brother #1 flipped the track “You Needn’t Worry Now” by the group Smoke. Smoke was on Chocolate City records, a subsidiary of Casablanca (Parliament, Kiss, etc.) I don’t have too much info about the group, but this self-titled album was produced by Wayne Henderson. The album is a mix of soul/funk and has lots of horns and strings in the mix.
