Before people get confused – there are 2 different versions of Smif-n-Wessun’s “Wrekonize“. The popular version samples Bill Withers “Just the Two of Us” (way before Will Smith or Dr. Evil & Mini-me). The album version samples New York Port Authority.
The NYPA were a group on hitmakers Holland-Dozier-Holland’s short-lived record label Invictus. Long story short, the album flopped and the group disbanded before recording a second album. Being named after a dirty bus terminal in New York City may have contributed to the lack of sales.
The album is mostly disco, but the cut “Home on a Rainy Day” is a sweet soul ballad. The intro bassline was filtered like most early Beatminerz production and used for the main loop of Smif-N-Wessun’s “Wrekonize”.
